What we watch in DeKalb County

DeKalb County is plateau country. Sand Mountain runs the length of it, flat on top and dropping off hard on both sides, and that shape drives the weather. Wind that has crossed open farmland for miles hits the treelines at the field edges with nothing to slow it down, and the trees along those edges take the whole load. Storm damage on the mountain tends to be concentrated in the windbreaks and the yard trees standing alone.

Fort Payne sits in the gap below the plateau, where Little River has cut down through sandstone and the ground goes from level to near vertical in a short distance. Access is usually the hard part. Where a truck cannot reach the trunk, the tree comes out by climbing line and gets carried to the road in pieces.

Across the county the housing runs from farmhouses with century-old oaks to newer builds where the lot was cleared to nothing. Both bring us out. One has trees that are past their span and the other has a few young ones that were never pruned for structure.
