Murray County from the ground up

Murray County is split down the middle by terrain. The eastern side climbs into Fort Mountain and the Cohutta Wilderness, steep and rocky, with cove hardwoods that have been growing undisturbed for a long time. The western half is flat farm ground running out toward the Conasauga. The tree work is not the same job on either side.

Up against the mountain the ground gives out before the tree does. Roots spread wide and shallow across rock, so a healthy-looking hardwood can tip whole in saturated soil after a long wet spell. On the flat, the problems are the ones people put there themselves: yard trees planted too close to the house forty years ago and never pruned for the space they were going to need.
